Three Steps To Achieve Your New Year Resolutions in Business

One of the beautiful things about the New Year is that it gives us a new slate to make new resolutions in our lives and businesses. The New Year always comes with new goals, plans, aspirations and targets for attainment. We get out and make great resolutions to break new heights in our chosen areas of expertise. But, studies have found that many people don’t follow through with their New Year plans and aspirations till the year ends. In fact, it is a truism that many people fall short and relapse before the second month in the New Year approaches.
Why do we fall short of our plans and aspirations? Why do we fire up in the New Year but lose steam as the year progresses?
The answer to these questions lies in the fact that we are humans; and as humans, we are creatures of habits and patterns. We make plans for the New Year without changing our habits and sets of assumptions that we have grown with over the years. And before we can become walk into the cycle of attainment, we must break every habit that has kept us bound for so long (Consciously or unconsciously).
To achieve your goals this new year, you must take these three simple but great steps;
1. Your New Year goals must be rooted in reality.
One of the most limiting things that make many people lose steam in the attainment of their goals in the New Year is the fact that their goals are disconnected from their reality. Many people set goals that are completely unattainable. Your goals must be something you can attain with hard work and dedication; they must also be something that can be achieved in your immediate environment and with your available resources. When your plan with what you have, and achieve it, it gives you powers to push your goals and aspirations into bigger heights and extremes.
It’s no use to set goals of building a skyscraper in six months when you have not built a one room apartment your whole life. It is also no use planning to become a world class footballer at 36. Doing these will be great on paper but will never see the light of day; it will be best described as an exercise in futility.
To keep your goals burning with steam in your heart, make sure they are rooted in your reality.
2. You must learn to structure your excitement.
Every New Year resolution in life and business is done with a high level of excitement while penning them down. During these moments of excitement, the trigger of just putting down something on paper creates so much excitement that we lose sight of the present. But goals and aspirations are not achieved with just a wave of excitement; they are achieved with structures.
To achieve your goals, you must learn to put structure to your excitement. Structures are what give life to your goals; they aid attainment, they ask you the ‘How to’ in achieving your goals.
Don’t just be excited about the New Year; learn to put structure to your excitement.
3. You must learn to execute efficiently.
In the realm of goal setting, execution is everything. Many people are in the habits of setting great goals without getting up to execute. It is great to say you want to be a great writer or a great designer in 2018, but it is best to get up and so what great writers and great designers do. You must walk and work in the habits of great writers and designers. Ideation is great, but the world has never become better with just ideas. The world is beautiful because of executors. While you have great ideas, you must get out and execute. Like Nike, just do it.
The reason you should structure your goals is this: structures aid execution. Execution aids attainment. In the realm of success, attainment is the main thing. To achieve your plans, you must structure your excitement. This structure is what will engender execution from small to big.
I strongly believe that 2018 is a great year for people who believe and walk their ideas. And doing these three things will effectively bring these great ideas to reality.
