Of Manchester United and Mourinho (A Business Case Study)

The marriage between Manchester United Football club and Jose Mourinho came at the time these two big parties needed themselves most. Manchester United had just gone through its worst session in many years as a football club; Mourinho had just gone through his worst season as a professional football manager.

Before the marriage, Manchester United was a force to be reckoned with in football history. It had (still has) a rich club history, philosophy, culture and glory. It has won all the major trophies in football. And has the wealthiest fans in the world – The English queen is rumored to be a fan of Manchester United.

Mourinho was a great manager. He has managed some of the top football clubs in Europe, and led all of them to glory. His reputation as ‘The special one’ was unequalled, and his knack for predicting, reading and winning tough games was legendary.

But then, these two big parties were at a frustrating point of decline. Mourinho was sacked from Chelsea after a very poor run. And Manchester United was bleeding profusely – losing its competitive edge. These guys came together, each party needing what the other has, and got married – a marriage of convenience.

Manchester went for Mourinho because of his big personality – his WHO. Mourinho went to Manchester United because of their philosophy – their WHY. In business, a great WHY needs a great WHO to succeed. Great philosophy and vision without great people is irrelevant. And great people without a great organizational philosophy will be frustrating.

Without a great philosophy, it will be difficult to attract great people into your organization. This is because, many times, great employees don’t concern themselves with money. They are more concerned with connecting with the vision, philosophy and direction of the company.

As an entrepreneur, you must create a compelling philosophy around your business in order to attract great people to work with you. And, the most beautiful thing is that, one great employee has the ability to attract another great employee. A perfect example is the fact that Zlatan Ibrahimovich – a brand enhancer, joined Manchester United because of Mourinho. If their WHY wasn’t great, it would have been very difficult to bring in these big personalities. The combination of Zlatan and Mourinho will be a big attraction to other great players to boost the club’s productivity and enliven its brand reputation.

Having the mix of a great ‘WHY’ and a great ‘WHO’ is very important for your organization. With great people, attainment is sure and development is easy. The right people don’t need to be overtly managed or motivated, they are already self-starters. They would be self-motivated to produce the best results, and to be a part of creating something big in the future. Also, great people will act as an attraction to other great people. They are called organizational magnets.
